CULTURE POST
White Holes
Italian theoretical physicist Carlo Rovelli says he writes for two types of people: those who know a huge amount about physics and those who know very little (hi), because both groups require him to skip the jargon and cut to the chase.
The chase of his latest book (out last week), is a journey deep into the heart of a black hole, so deep that we reach the bottom, where time and space appear to end, but not quite. Because there's a 'bounce back', the equations reverse, and a white hole is born.
In only 130 pages, Rovelli tells us simply and poetically how this (and much more) actually works. He also weaves in Dante, Sioux wisdom, the wonder of discovery and life and general and the idea of love at first sight. One of the best (and best looking) books I've read all year, very much love at first read.
'Possibly the most charming book by a mainstream scientist this year' – The Financial Times
'If you want to remember why you once fell in love with the idea of the cosmos, or want to fall in love with that idea for the first time, then this book is for you' - The Guardian
'A miniature masterpiece' – The Evening Standard

HAPPY POST
IN THE BAG
In my experience there are two main types of last minute pre-holiday purchases that the unseasoned shopper can easily succumb to:
a. The panic buy that never leaves the suitcase, then spends its life languishing in a dark drawer ‘just in case’.
And ….
b. The totally inspired, accidental ‘forever find’ that you cannot believe you ever managed to live without.
This bag - 9 x pockets, 2 x shoulders straps, 2 x great neutral colourways, lightweight canvas, £14.99 - it's firmly a ‘b'.
It has seen me through numerous airports, markets, beaches etc with not so much as a lost passport, key, spf.
Now using it for work, school run, shopping trips … you name it!
